Communication is an important skill necessary as a high school student at TJHSST, as well as college and beyond. TJ Students need to be able to effectively convey their understanding of concepts and be able to exchange their thoughts and ideas both verbally and in written form. Students must be able to listen to others and cooperate to complete tasks and solve problems. Describe two scenarios where you communicated using verbal and in written forms (one scenario each). Reflect on how you would improve your communication in each. Please respond in short answer/essay format and include specific details.

A TJ student drinks 400 mg of caffeine, once at the beginning of every hour, for 3 hours. The half-life of caffeine (the amount of time it takes for the initial substance to be cut in half), is exactly 1 hour. 6 hours after the first 400mg caffeine dose, how much caffeine is remaining in the student's system?
The student can go to sleep after the remaining amount of total caffeine is only 40mg. After how many hours (rounded to the nearest hour) can the student go to sleep? What are some other variables that can impact the amount of sleep the student receives?

How to use timed practice
Timing is the last layer, not the first. These steps follow the guidance in our public SPS and PSE guides.
- Get the thinking right before the clock. For the PSE, our guide recommends building accurate interpretation and reasoning first and adding time limits only once the process is reliable. For the SPS, the goal is a real moment that fits the task, explained in the student’s own words.
- Choose a pace that feels a little generous. The presets are practice paces. Tighten them as the writing gets steadier, and switch to the official conditions once the TJHSST Admissions Office sends applicant instructions.
- Write in one sitting. Use Pause only for a real interruption. The point is to practice holding a complete line of thought from start to finish.
- If time runs short, secure the core. In an SPS response, make sure the direct answer and the reflection are on the page. In a PSE response, state the model, show the key steps, label the result, and answer the original question, as our pacing guide explains.
- Review once, then fix one thing. Read the response against the checklist and pick one meaningful improvement for next time, rather than rewriting everything at once.
- Use a fresh prompt next time. Repeating a prompt you have already seen trains recognition, not reasoning. New tasks build the skill that transfers when the topic changes.
What FCPS publishes about the SPS and PSE, and what it does not
The FCPS freshman application page describes what each component asks for. It leaves out the details families most often ask about, which is why this tool does not invent them.

- SPS purpose. Students demonstrate five broad Portrait of a Graduate attributes and 21st century skills.
- PSE content. Math and/or science content, with a topic that involves multiple variables or steps.
- PSE response. A solution plus an explanation of the process, written in essay format.
- 2026-27 dates. The main SPS and essay writing administration is January 9, 2027. The accommodations and alternate-day administration is January 14, 2027. Dates may change.
Not published on the current page
- Prompts. No live prompts and no official current SPS or PSE sample.
- Timing. No total session length and no time for each component.
- Length. No prompt count and no word or character limits.
- Interface. No description of the testing screen or what happens when time expires.
- Scoring. No rubric, scoring weights, or cut scores.

Timed practice questions, answered
How much time do students get for the SPS and PSE?
FCPS does not say on its current freshman application page. It does not publish the total session length, the time for each component, or response limits. That is why this screen uses a practice pace you choose. When the TJHSST Admissions Office sends applicant instructions, practice under those conditions.
Why doesn’t this page give my student a practice prompt?
FCPS has not released an official current SPS or PSE sample, and our prompt bank is part of our paid programs. Your student can paste a prompt from a teacher, tutor, or prep book. For a fresh SPS prompt and PSE prompt with written feedback on the response, take the free TJ diagnostic.
Which practice pace should my student choose?
Start with a pace that feels generous. TJTestPrep’s guidance is to build accurate reasoning before adding time pressure, then tighten the pace once the process is reliable. The presets are practice paces, not FCPS timing, so do not train around an old minute count.
Is there a word limit for the SPS or PSE?
FCPS does not publish a word or character limit for either one. The live word count on this screen shows how much your student wrote. It is not a target, and longer is not automatically better.
Does anything my student types get sent to TJ Test Prep?
No. The response is saved only in this browser so it survives a refresh. Your student can download it as a text file, and starting a new practice clears it. The only thing ever sent is an email address, and only if you choose to request the Blueprint.
Is the self-review checklist the official scoring rubric?
No. FCPS does not publish a scoring rubric or scoring weights for the SPS or PSE. The checklists come from TJTestPrep’s public coaching guidance: the five-part SPS writing lens and the Five Jobs PSE lens. Nothing on this page is scored.
Does this screen look like the real TJ test?
FCPS does not publish interface details, so no public tool can promise a replica. This is a plain, distraction-free writing screen that builds the habit of focused, timed writing. On test day, follow the official instructions.
When are the SPS and PSE for the 2026-27 cycle?
FCPS lists the main SPS and essay writing administration for Saturday, January 9, 2027, and the accommodations and alternate-day administration for Thursday, January 14, 2027, with weather backup dates of January 23 and February 4, 2027. FCPS notes that dates may change.
