Instructor feedback

Know what to work on next.

When an answer needs work, your student should know why. We read their responses closely and explain what’s working, what’s missing, and what to try in the next draft.

  • Specific, line-by-line notes on evidence, reasoning, structure, and whether the response answers the prompt.
  • 15 feedback credits included. Use them for SPS or PSE responses. One response submitted for review uses one credit.
  • Ask as many questions as you need. An instructor answers through the course Q&A channel or email. Questions do not use feedback credits.
What useful feedback looks likeIllustrative example
An SPS draft
“I showed leadership by helping my group finish the project.”

“Helping my group” is too broad to show what you actually contributed.

Instructor feedback

Cut “I showed leadership” and start with the problem your group faced. Explain what you proposed, why you chose that approach, and how it helped the group.

One possible revision

“When our group disagreed about a bridge design, I suggested testing both options with the same weights so we could compare them fairly. The results helped us agree on a design, divide the remaining tasks, and finish on time.”

Why it’s stronger: We can see the problem, the reasoning behind your idea, and what the group did next.

An illustrative teaching example, not a student submission or a screenshot of the course. Use only details that actually happened in your own experience.

How it works

Work through the course at your own pace.

Watch a lesson, try a response, and ask for help when you need it.

  1. 01

    Watch or read a lesson

Open a video lesson or written guide any time. Pause, replay, and revisit the parts that need more time.

  2. 02

    Try a practice response

Work through TJ-specific SPS and PSE prompts. Practice planning, typing, and explaining your thinking under time pressure.

  3. 03

    Ask questions and revise

Submit a response for detailed review. Use the notes in your next draft, and ask an instructor when something is unclear.

Built around TJ’s written assessments

What your student will work on.

Video instruction, written guides, sample responses, and practice with explanations.

SPSYour experiences

Turn real experiences into specific answers.

The Student Portrait Sheet asks students to explain who they are through what they have done.

  • Find meaningful examples from your own life.
  • Show your decisions, actions, and reflection.
  • Write clearly and stay focused under time pressure.
PSEYour reasoning

Show how you think, not just the final answer.

The Problem-Solving Essay asks students to work through an unfamiliar math or science problem.

  • Build the math and science foundations you need.
  • Explain your setup, assumptions, and steps.
  • Study worked solutions and practice with a timer.

TJ’s SPS and PSE are computer-based. Online practice builds familiarity with planning and typing responses, without another drive to a prep center.

How do students access the course?

After enrollment, we email access instructions for Google Classroom, where students find the lessons, guides, practice, and instructions for submitting work and asking questions. Materials are available 24/7.

What does instructor feedback include?

Instructors review SPS and PSE responses with line-by-line notes on reasoning, evidence, structure, and how well the response answers the prompt. Enrollment includes 15 feedback credits. Each response submitted for review uses one credit. Additional credits are available separately.

Is Q&A really unlimited?

Yes. Students can ask course questions and follow-up questions through the Q&A channel or email, with answers from a real instructor. Q&A does not use feedback credits. A full review of a new or revised essay response does use a credit. Materials are available 24/7; instructor replies are asynchronous, not a 24-hour live chat service.

How long do we have access?

Access continues through your student’s 8th-grade admissions cycle. Students who start in an earlier grade can spread the work out and revisit materials as they prepare. There is no monthly subscription.

How is this different from Small Group Coaching?

Self-Paced gives students flexible access to recorded instruction, practice, 15 feedback credits, and unlimited Q&A. Small Group Coaching adds scheduled live instruction, unlimited SPS/PSE feedback, and the proctored practice exam series. Compare the formats based on the structure and support your student needs.

Are proctored practice exams included?

No. Proctored practice exams are available separately, either individually or as a series. The self-paced course includes practice materials, but not enrollment in those proctored exam sessions. View practice exams.
