The Official SPS Format in Plain English
FCPS describes the Student Portrait Sheet as an application component in which students demonstrate Portrait of a Graduate attributes and 21st century skills. It names five broad attributes: collaborator, communicator, creative and critical thinker, ethical and global citizen, and goal-directed and resilient individual.
The same page labels the scheduled event an “SPS/Essay writing administration.” That establishes that the SPS is completed as part of the writing administration, alongside the Problem-Solving Essay. It does not establish every screen, field, length limit, or timing rule a student will see.
Current 2026-27 Date
The main SPS and essay writing administration is scheduled for January 9, 2027. January 14 is listed for approved accommodations and alternate-day requests. FCPS says dates may change, so applicants should keep checking the official page and their admissions messages.

Where the SPS Fits on Writing Day
The SPS and PSE are different tasks. FCPS connects the SPS to five broad Portrait of a Graduate attributes and 21st century skills. The PSE uses math and/or science content, includes multiple variables or steps, and asks for a solution plus an explanation of the process in essay form.
Students need to prepare for both, but they should not treat one as a substitute for the other. The SPS asks students to communicate clearly about the broad attributes; the PSE asks them to solve and explain a multi-step math or science problem.
Be Careful With “Real SPS Questions” Online
