The TJ prep timeline, grade by grade
A student applies to TJHSST in the fall of 8th grade. That means a current 4th grader applies in fall 2030, a 5th grader in fall 2029, a 6th grader in fall 2028, a 7th grader in fall 2027, and an 8th grader this fall. Most students benefit from starting focused prep in late 7th grade or the summer before 8th. Before that, the work is foundations: strong math, reading and writing habits, and genuine interests.
- 4th grade
Keep math strong and independent, make reading and journaling a habit, and let your child explore STEM clubs, builds, and puzzles with no TJ pressure. TJ-specific prep is not needed. Starting it this early risks burnout, and more prep past a point brings diminishing returns. When to start TJ prep
- 5th grade
This is the math readiness year. Look for A’s your child earns without heavy parent help, and listen to what the math teacher says unprompted. If your school offers Algebra 1 Honors in 6th grade, weigh independent grades, the actual test score (not only the percentile), and the teacher’s view together. When unsure, wait a year: a strong A beats a stretched B. If your child does accelerate, a few summer weeks of Algebra 1 pre-exposure helps more than a compressed summer course. - 6th grade
Stay on track for Algebra 1 by 8th grade, explore STEM without pressure, and start a reflective writing habit. A few competition-style problems a week, such as AMC 8 or MathCounts, build flexible problem-solving. Math course level is not scored for TJ, so a comfortable A matters more than speed. - 7th grade
The GPA year. Every 7th grade core final grade counts at a full credit toward the 3.5 TJ GPA, so protect those grades. Choose 8th grade courses that meet eligibility: honors science, honors English or social studies (or Young Scholar identification), and the Algebra 1 rule. - Summer before 8th grade
The best time to begin structured Student Portrait Sheet and Problem-Solving Essay practice. A high school credit course taken this summer counts at a full credit in the TJ GPA, so take one only if your child is ready to earn a strong grade. It is not an admissions bonus. - 8th grade
Run an eligibility audit and get an honest SPS and PSE baseline in August and September. For 2026-27, applications open Monday, October 5, 2026 at 4 p.m., the last day to begin is October 28, and the deadline is Friday, October 30 at 4 p.m. On or before December 31, FCPS notifies applicants who do not meet the honors-course and GPA minimums. The math rule, and what it does not mean
When the application opens, FCPS requires a completed full-year Algebra 1 course, or current enrollment in full-year honors Algebra 1. If the school does not offer honors Algebra 1, the highest Algebra 1 level available counts. An applicant does not need Geometry, Algebra 2, or precalculus.
FCPS does not publish an admissions bonus for advanced math. Its review looks at the core GPA, the Student Portrait Sheet, the Problem-Solving Essay, and experience factors, which are context such as economic disadvantage, English learner status, or special education, not bonus points. Acceleration can help a student build a deeper toolkit for the Problem-Solving Essay, but only if the student earns a strong A. A rushed course that lowers the core GPA does more harm than good.
Summer Geometry comes up at two different points. Between 7th and 8th grade, a high school credit course counts in the TJ GPA at full credit. After admission, TJHSST allows Geometry Honors in the summer before 9th grade but strongly encourages taking it in person during the school year. Should I take summer Geometry?
The four eligibility gates
FCPS checks all four when the application opens in the fall of 8th grade. Plan courses backward from them.
- Algebra 1. Completed full-year Algebra 1, or enrolled in full-year honors Algebra 1 (or the highest Algebra 1 level offered).
- Honors science. Enrolled in honors science, or the highest level of 8th grade science offered.
- Honors English or social studies. Enrolled in an honors English or social studies course, or identified as a Young Scholar or in a similar program.
- 3.5 core GPA. Unweighted, from 7th grade final grades and 8th grade first quarter grades. Our TJ GPA calculator calculates it the way FCPS does.
Applicants must live in Arlington, Fairfax County (including the City of Fairfax), Falls Church City, Loudoun, or Prince William. Private and homeschool students who live in those divisions are eligible but compete only for unallocated seats. TJHSST offers 550 freshman seats, and decisions are Offer, Waitpool, or No Offer.
TJ prep timeline questions
Most students benefit from starting focused TJ prep in late 7th grade or the summer before 8th grade. Before that, the useful work is foundations: strong math, reflective writing, and genuine interests. 6th grade is for exploration, not TJ-specific prep. A student who starts in 8th grade can still make real progress with three to four months of focused preparation.

For the 2026-27 cycle (Class of 2031), applications open October 5, 2026 and close October 30, 2026 at 4 p.m. The Student Portrait Sheet and Problem-Solving Essay are on January 9, 2027, and decisions arrive on or before April 30, 2027. The freshman window closes at the deadline, and October 28, 2026 is the last day to begin for the 2026-27 cycle. There is no late application. TJHSST also runs a sophomore admissions process for 9th graders.
