Mixing these lanes creates false work. A parent cannot practice the student's writing voice, and a student should not be responsible for interpreting residency paperwork alone. Assign the right person to each task.
August and September: Build the Foundation
Run an eligibility audit
- Confirm the family lives in a participating school division.
- Check the Algebra 1, science, and additional honors or advanced-potential requirements.
- Review seventh-grade final marks and current eighth-grade core courses against the official GPA method.
- Identify proof-of-residency or homeschool course documentation early if it applies.
- Ask the school counselor about any record discrepancy before the application window.
Establish an honest SPS and PSE baseline
Have the student complete one unfamiliar SPS prompt and one multistep math or science explanation without coaching. The purpose is diagnostic. Look for prompt interpretation, specificity, logical completeness, mathematical accuracy, and whether the writing sounds like the student.
Do not respond by assigning ten essays a week. Pick the first bottleneck. A student who cannot choose a useful example needs brainstorming practice. A student who solves correctly but writes an unreadable PSE needs explanation practice. A student who freezes needs shorter timed sets before a full simulation.

FCPS says the liaison verification alone can take at least 24 to 48 hours. Starting on October 5 creates room for that delay. Waiting until the final week turns a routine administrative step into a preventable crisis.
What not to do in October
Do not pause all SPS and PSE practice to build a resume or chase teacher recommendations. The current freshman process does not list those as separate evaluation components. Keep the portal work administrative and the student work skill-based.
November and December: Make Practice More Realistic
Once the portal is submitted, preparation should become more deliberate. The goal is not to stockpile memorized answers. It is to make the student's decision process more reliable when the prompt is new.
For the SPS
- Build an experience bank with specific moments from school, family, teams, projects, and independent interests.
- Practice matching an experience to the prompt instead of forcing the most impressive activity into every answer.
- Show what the student did, why the decision mattered, and what changed.
- Check the response against the five broad FCPS Portrait of a Graduate attributes without turning them into buzzwords.
- Revise for clarity while protecting the student's natural voice.
For the PSE
- Translate the prompt into known quantities, unknowns, constraints, and a plan.
- Practice problems with multiple variables or steps, as the official description states.
- Write the solution and the reasoning in essay form.
- Check units, assumptions, and whether the result is reasonable.
- Review errors by category so the next practice set targets the actual weakness.
On December 17 at 6 p.m., FCPS plans to notify applicants who do not meet the minimum honors and GPA requirements. Families who receive any official notice should follow its instructions rather than relying on a general blog summary.
January: Taper Into the Writing Administration
The main SPS and essay administration is January 9, 2027. January 14 is the approved accommodations and alternate day. The weather dates are January 23 and February 4.
FCPS has not published current timing, response lengths, or question counts on the freshman page. Build the final simulation around the applicant instructions when they arrive. Do not assume a format from 2024 or 2025 still controls.
In the final week
- Complete the last full simulation early enough to learn from it.
- Use the final sessions for targeted correction, not new advanced content.
- Review the student's own checklist for reading, planning, writing, and checking.
- Confirm location, arrival instructions, identification, and approved accommodations from official messages.
