TJ's research program currently includes nine specialized Senior Research Labs and Research Practicum. The official science and technology pathway says students complete one lab or Research Practicum for the senior capstone.
The labs span astronomy and astrophysics, biotechnology and life sciences, chemical analysis and nanochemistry, computer systems, engineering, mobile and web application development, neuroscience, oceanography and geophysical systems, and quantum physics and optics.
Each path has published prerequisites. That matters more than an old equipment list or a dramatic project example. The preparation is not merely working near advanced technology. It is learning to frame a question, use an appropriate method, document decisions, interpret evidence, revise, and communicate a result.
Research Practicum provides another route for eligible students to complete the senior requirement through work with professionals outside the school's technology laboratories. The school says the practicum holds the same project requirements and academic goals as in-school research.
STEM Work Still Depends on Communication
Technical ability alone does not make a project useful. Students have to describe a problem, listen to collaborators, document a method, defend an interpretation, and revise when evidence does not support the original idea.
TJ's published mission and school profile emphasize critical inquiry, problem solving, research, communication, collaboration, ethical behavior, and social responsibility. Those are not decorative values. They are the skills that allow technical work to move from an individual insight to something other people can understand, test, or build upon.
tjSTAR gives students a schoolwide setting to share research, receive feedback, learn about future opportunities, and interact with peers, alumni, and community partners. It is a useful example of research as communication rather than research as a private assignment.
College and Career Support Starts Before Senior Fall
The TJHSST College and Career Center describes itself as a resource supporting school counseling goals from ninth through twelfth grade. Its published areas include:
- exploring colleges and universities for fit
- exploring careers, apprenticeships, technical schools, and military options
- understanding financial aid and scholarships
- researching enrichment and volunteer opportunities
This is more credible than claiming that a counselor can place a student at a particular university. The center provides information, access, and guidance. The student still has to build an academic record, make decisions, complete applications, and choose a path that fits.
What TJHSST Does Not Promise

Those habits can travel to college and a career. The student still has to build them.
