Life at TJHSST: A Current Guide for Incoming Freshmen

Incoming students do not need a collection of rumors to understand life at TJHSST. The school publishes a Class of 2030 course guide, an incoming-student FAQ, activity and athletics information, transportation instructions, and a current research-program page. Read together, those sources give families a much clearer picture than an old list of clubs or an anonymous estimate of nightly homework.

This guide stays with the parts of the experience that TJHSST and FCPS currently document. Individual teachers, schedules, activities, and routes can change, so details that belong to a particular year should always be checked on the school site.

The Current Freshman Schedule

Every incoming ninth grader takes Biology 1, English 9, a math course determined by the highest level completed in middle school, Design and Technology, Health and PE 9, a world language, and one elective. TJ identifies Biology, English, and Design and Technology as the three IBET components.

The elective is the main area where an incoming student makes a personal choice. The current page lists examples in journalism, photojournalism, band, orchestra, theater, visual arts, social studies, and computer science. That list is useful for orientation, but students should use the current course-selection materials when it is time to submit choices.

Math placement is not a prestige contest. TJ publishes a sequence tied to the student's completed middle-school course. The useful preparation is to understand that sequence and protect the foundation needed for the next course.

What 8th Period Is For

TJHSST describes 8th Period as part of the school day. Students can use it for academic support, exploring interests, pursuing passions, and supervised social activities. The school publishes an activity list but explicitly says the list is subject to change.

That is why this guide does not advertise a fixed number of clubs. The better question is whether the current activity list includes a few things the student genuinely wants to explore. Incoming students can review the list, notice possible options, and leave room to learn how sign-ups work after school begins.

Athletics Are Part of the Published Program

TJHSST's Class of 2030 academic-information page lists 28 competitive athletic programs across fall, winter, and spring. Students interested in a sport should review the current athletics information, season, and participation requirements instead of relying on a broad claim that TJ does or does not offer a particular kind of school experience.

Activities and athletics both require time. A sensible first-year plan is to identify a short list, learn the actual schedule, and then decide what fits alongside the student's course load and transportation.

Transportation Uses District Depot Systems

Transportation is not identical for every TJ family. The current welcome page says Fairfax County and Falls Church City families receive an FCPS depot survey after accepting their offer. Families in Arlington, Loudoun, and Prince William must contact their own district transportation office.

The page also notes that morning and afternoon depot choices can differ. Families should map the real door-to-door routine, including travel to and from the depot, rather than using someone else's commute estimate.

The Senior Research Program

TJHSST's current research page lists nine senior research labs:

A Useful Plan for the First Weeks

1. Confirm the schedule. Check course placement and elective information against the current Class of 2030 materials.
2. Learn the transportation routine. Save the correct depot contacts and test the family's real morning and afternoon plan.
3. Browse activities without overcommitting. Pick a few options to explore during 8th Period.
4. Check athletics by season. Use the official school page for current participation information.
5. Keep senior research in perspective. Know that the program exists, but focus first on the courses and routines directly in front of you.

A strong transition is less about knowing every TJ tradition in advance and more about using current information well. The school publishes the structure. Students can then make thoughtful choices once they meet their teachers, see the activity schedule, and understand the rhythm of their own week.
