What to Do Before Each Date
Before October 5: confirm eligibility
FCPS checks the course requirements as of the day the application opens: Algebra 1, honors science, honors English or social studies (or Young Scholars identification), and an unweighted core GPA of 3.5 or higher. The student must also live in a participating division. Check the GPA in two minutes with our TJ GPA calculator; FCPS does not round, so a 3.499 does not qualify.
October 5 to 28: start early
The student logs in first and enters a parent name and email. The parent then gets an automated email to create the parent account, and that link expires. Next, the school liaison counselor verifies the student’s math course, and FCPS says to allow 24 to 48 hours. A family that starts on October 28 has no room for that wait.
By October 30 at 4 p.m.: sign and submit
Both the student and the parent sign the application electronically. Submit before the final afternoon and keep the confirmation email. If your student needs testing accommodations or an alternate test day, that request is due by the same deadline.
By December 31: watch for an eligibility notice
FCPS contacts only applicants who do not meet the minimum honors course and GPA requirements. Eligible students are not notified and continue to the January writing day.
Before January 9: practice the SPS and PSE
The October application gets a student into the process. The January writing day is what students actually prepare for. The Student Portrait Sheet asks for specific experiences that show the FCPS Portrait of a Graduate attributes. The Problem-Solving Essay asks for a solution to a multi-step math or science problem and a clear explanation of the reasoning. Our free TJ diagnostic shows where your student stands on both.
By April 30: decisions
FCPS offers 550 seats after a holistic review of core GPA, the SPS, the PSE, and experience factors. Every applicant receives Offer, Waitpool, or No Offer. A student who is offered a seat must accept or decline by the stated deadline, and TJHSST does not allow deferrals.

How to Read This Calendar
- Times are Eastern.
- October times are Eastern Daylight Time (UTC−4). Daylight saving time ends November 1, 2026, so the December through April dates fall in Eastern Standard Time (UTC−5). The countdown and the calendar files handle the change for you.
- “On or before” dates.
- FCPS gives a latest date for eligibility notices and for decisions. Either can arrive earlier.
- Weather dates.
- January 23 and February 4 are used only if FCPS cancels the January 9 or January 14 administration for inclement weather.
- April 30.
- FCPS’s calendar labels April 30 as a Wednesday, but April 30, 2027 is a Friday. The date is what counts.
- Dates can change.
- FCPS says its calendar may change. If it does, we update this page and the calendar files.
TJ Admissions Dates: Common Questions
The completed TJHSST application is due Friday, October 30, 2026 at 4:00 p.m. Eastern time. The last day to begin an application is two days earlier, Wednesday, October 28, at 4:00 p.m. Requests for testing accommodations and an alternate test day are due by the October 30 deadline too.
The FCPS online application for the TJHSST Class of 2031 opens Monday, October 5, 2026 at 4:00 p.m. Eastern time. FCPS checks the course eligibility requirements as of that day.
The Student Portrait Sheet and Problem-Solving Essay writing administration is Saturday, January 9, 2027. Students with approved accommodations or an approved alternate test day write on Thursday, January 14. The inclement weather dates are Saturday, January 23 (for January 9) and Thursday, February 4 (for January 14).

Yes. Every time FCPS publishes, such as 4:00 p.m. on October 5, 28, and 30, is Eastern time. Those October dates fall in Eastern Daylight Time. If you are outside the Eastern time zone, the countdown also shows the time where you are, and the calendar files convert automatically.
