Should an Incoming TJHSST Student Take PE Over the Summer?

Summer Health and PE 9 can create room for another course during freshman year. That makes it attractive to incoming TJHSST families. The catch is that TJ's own current pages do not say the same thing about whether an incoming student may use summer HPE 9 for that purpose.

The short answer

Do not enroll based on a general FCPS summer listing alone. Ask TJ Student Services which rule applies to your incoming class, get any required transfer approval in writing, and review the actual summer workload before paying.

The Official Guidance Conflict

TJHSST's Class of 2030 FAQ, updated April 23, 2026, says incoming ninth graders may earn summer credit for Health and PE 9 with CPR. The same FAQ says students may take only one course for advancement during the summer, apart from its stated exception for self-directed Economics and Personal Finance. It also says summer credit from programs inside or outside FCPS must be approved for transfer by TJ Student Services.

A separate current TJ page titled “Choosing Your 9th Grade Courses” lists Health and PE 9 among required freshman courses and says that this course and all diploma requirements must be taken during the school day.

Those statements conflict. The Class of 2030 FAQ is also specific to students entering in fall 2026, not every later class. A family entering in a different year should wait for that class's official registration materials or ask TJ Student Services directly.

What to ask before registering
  • May my student use this exact HPE 9 course for TJHSST credit?
  • Is advance transfer approval required, and who provides it?
  • Will the credit create an open elective slot in the student's actual ninth-grade schedule?
  • Where should the final transcript be sent, and by what deadline?

What the FCPS Summer Course Requires

Online does not mean self-paced. For summer 2026, FCPS Online Campus lists a compressed daily schedule for HPE 9:

  • A one-hour synchronous class each weekday.
  • Five to six hours of asynchronous work each day.
  • Daily documented physical activity and reflection.
  • Access to a smartphone app or fitness tracker for heart-rate recording.
  • An in-person CPR assessment.

FCPS also warns that summer courses move quickly and have strict attendance and submission rules. A family planning travel, camps, or another academic course should compare every date before enrolling. Future summers may use different dates, tuition, technology, or testing requirements, so use the live Online Campus page rather than an old screenshot.

How to Make the Decision

Summer HPE may make sense when

  • TJ Student Services confirms that the exact credit will transfer.
  • The open space supports a course the student genuinely wants to take.
  • The student can meet the daily attendance, assignment, exercise, and in-person requirements.
  • The compressed course does not crowd out needed rest or another important commitment.

Keeping HPE during the school year may make sense when

  • The transfer rule is unclear or approval has not been granted.
  • The summer calendar includes travel or other conflicts.
  • The student wants a less compressed way to complete health, physical activity, and CPR requirements.
  • The extra elective would make the freshman schedule heavier without adding much value.

There is no admissions advantage to having taken HPE in the summer. This is a scheduling decision for an admitted student's high school program. The right choice is the one that is approved, workable, and connected to a thoughtful four-year plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an incoming TJHSST student take Health and PE 9 over the summer?

Possibly, but confirm before enrolling. TJHSST's Class of 2030 FAQ says incoming students may earn summer credit for Health and PE 9 with CPR, subject to transfer approval. A separate current TJHSST course-selection page says Health and PE 9 and diploma requirements must be taken during the school day. Families should ask TJ Student Services which rule applies to their incoming class and obtain written approval before paying.

How much work is FCPS summer Health and PE 9?

For summer 2026, FCPS Online Campus lists a daily one-hour synchronous class, five to six hours of asynchronous work each day, documented physical activity, and an in-person CPR assessment. Future dates and requirements may change.

Why do students consider taking Health and PE 9 in the summer?

Completing an approved summer credit can create room for another course during ninth grade. That scheduling benefit is real, but it is only useful if TJHSST accepts the credit and the summer workload fits the student's plans.
