Beginning in Geometry Honors is a normal published pathway, not evidence that a student is behind. Beginning in calculus does not remove the need to follow TJHSST prerequisites. The strongest plan is the course in which the student has the foundation to learn well.
The Required Math Path
The official flow chart says TJHSST students take four years of math and earn four high-school math credits beyond Algebra 1. It also identifies AP Calculus AB or AP Calculus BC as fulfilling the calculus graduation requirement.
For a student whose highest course before TJHSST was Algebra 1, the published sequence begins with Geometry Honors, then Algebra 2 Honors. From there, the flow chart separates into two main precalculus and calculus routes:

Statistics is not merely an after-calculus add-on in the current chart. TJHSST lists AP Statistics after Algebra 2 Honors and describes a semester option for students who completed Algebra 2 at TJHSST. It also lists a year option and shows AP Statistics leading to Statistical Models for Data Science.
This matters because a student can build meaningful quantitative depth without treating every decision as a sprint toward multivariable calculus. A statistics path may fit a student's interests in data, research, or modeling, while the calculus requirement remains part of the broader graduation sequence.
How to Plan the Pathway Well
- Start from the transcript, not a comparison with classmates. The published placement rule begins with completed coursework.
