The TJHSST freshman process becomes much less confusing once you stop treating it like one long application. It is a sequence: register in the portal, let the school verify eligibility, submit the administrative application, complete the SPS and PSE in January, and then wait for FCPS to finish its holistic review and seat allocation.
Most preventable family mistakes happen when those stages get blurred. Parents try to perfect essays during the October portal window, students assume a counselor has already verified the course record, or everyone remembers the submission deadline but misses the earlier last day to begin.

Stage 1: The Student Starts the Portal Workflow
For the Class of 2031, the portal opens October 5, 2026 at 4 p.m. FCPS instructs the applicant to complete the initial login before the parent. The student enters a parent name and email address, which triggers an email link for the parent account.
Use an email address the parent checks, open the link promptly because it expires, and make sure names and addresses match the family's records. This is not glamorous work, but clean administrative details prevent delays later.
Two deadlines, not one
October 28 at 4 p.m. is the last day to begin an application. October 30 at 4 p.m. is the submission deadline, including accommodation and alternate-day requests. A family that waits until October 30 may already be too late to start.
Stage 2: The School Verifies Eligibility
After the parent account is created, the TJ liaison counselor verifies the student's math course. FCPS says to allow at least 24 to 48 hours for this step. An automated message tells the student and parent when they may continue.
Course verification is only part of eligibility. Applicants also need the required science and English/language arts or social studies course status, or the applicable advanced-potential designation, plus a 3.5 or higher core GPA. The core GPA uses seventh-grade final marks and first-quarter eighth-grade marks in the courses FCPS specifies.
On December 17, 2026 at 6 p.m., FCPS plans to notify applicants who do not meet the minimum honors and GPA requirements. That is an eligibility screen, not an early admissions decision.
Stage 3: Both Parties Sign and Submit
The student and parent must both sign electronically. After submission, each should receive an automated confirmation. Save that message and keep monitoring the address used in the application.
This is the pro tip families usually need: the portal submission is largely registration and verification. It does not ask the student to upload a recommendation packet, resume, or finished set of SPS responses. Preparation should stay focused on the later writing administration rather than inventing extra application components.
Stage 4: The Student Completes the SPS and PSE
The main SPS and essay writing administration is scheduled for January 9, 2027. January 14 is the accommodations and alternate writing day. January 23 and February 4 are the corresponding inclement-weather dates.
What the SPS is for
FCPS says the Student Portrait Sheet asks applicants to demonstrate five broad Portrait of a Graduate attributes: collaborator, communicator, creative and critical thinker, ethical and global citizen, and goal-directed and resilient individual. The strongest practice teaches a student to choose a specific example and explain what it reveals, not to memorize a polished answer.
What the PSE is for
FCPS describes the Problem-Solving Essay as math and/or science content involving multiple variables or steps. The student must give a solution and explain the process in essay form. The public page does not provide current timing, response length, or question-count details, so use the instructions issued for this cycle rather than an old blog post.
Stage 5: FCPS Conducts the Holistic Review
The current freshman page says FCPS evaluates core GPA, the SPS, the PSE, and experience factors for students who are economically disadvantaged, English language learners, or special education students. It says 550 seats will be offered to the highest-evaluated students after the holistic review.
The word holistic does not mean every aspect of a student's life is scored. The published process still names specific inputs. Clubs and competitions may supply real experiences a student can discuss in an SPS response, but FCPS does not list an extracurricular resume or teacher recommendation as a separate freshman criterion.
Stage 6: Allocated and Unallocated Seats Are Filled
Each participating public middle school is presumptively allocated seats equal to 1.5% of its eighth-grade population. Public-school applicants are first evaluated against applicants from the same school for those allocated seats.
The remaining seats are unallocated. Remaining public-school applicants and applicants who do not attend a participating public school compete in that group. If a school has fewer eligible applicants than its presumptive allocation, the unused difference becomes unallocated.
Allocated does not mean guaranteed to a particular student. Unallocated does not mean second-rate. Both paths depend on the evaluated application.
Stage 7: Every Applicant Receives a Decision
FCPS lists three outcomes: Offer, Waitpool, and No Offer. Final notifications are scheduled on or before April 30, 2027. An offer must be accepted or declined by the deadline in the applicant's notice, and FCPS does not permit deferrals.
Students who accept a waitpool place may receive an offer if admitted students decline. FCPS says waitpool offers go to the highest-evaluated students remaining in that pool and can continue until seats are filled or the school year begins, whichever comes first.
The family's best process control
- Start the portal on October 5 rather than near the last-day-to-begin deadline.
- Confirm course and residency documentation before the portal opens.
- Save automated confirmations and check the application email regularly.
- Keep SPS and PSE practice separate from administrative application tasks.
- Treat official FCPS notices as the source of truth when a date or instruction changes.
