TJHSST Sophomore Admissions: Everything You Need to Know

Overview of TJHSST Sophomore Admissions

Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST) accepts a small number of rising sophomores each year through a highly selective admissions process. This opportunity is ideal for current 9th-grade students with a strong academic foundation and a demonstrated passion for STEM. Typically, 10 to 20 students are admitted based on space availability and application strength.


Eligibility Requirements

Residency:

Applicants must live with a parent or legal guardian in one of the following Virginia jurisdictions:

  • Fairfax County (including Fairfax City)

  • Arlington County

  • Loudoun County

  • Prince William County

  • Falls Church City


Coursework (by end of 9th grade):

Students must be on track to complete the following high school-level credits:

  • English (1.0 credit)

  • Algebra I (1.0 credit)

  • Geometry (1.0 credit)

  • Biology (1.0 credit)

  • World Language (1.0 credit)

  • Health/PE (1.0 credit)

  • Elective (1.0 credit)


Academic Performance:

A minimum GPA is not officially required, but successful applicants typically maintain a GPA of 3.5 or higher.


Standardized Testing (Optional, but highly recommended):

Students are encouraged to submit PSAT or SAT scores, preferably in the 90th percentile or above. While not mandatory, strong scores can strengthen the application.


Key Application Dates (2024–2025)

  • April 1–April 23, 2025 (by 4:00 PM): Submit 9th-grade transcript and any optional standardized test scores to tjadmissions@fcps.edu

  • May 2025: Notification of eligibility to continue the application

  • May 16, 2025 (by 4:00 PM): Deadline to submit the full application

  • June 2025: Admission decisions released

Application Components

  1. Academic Transcript: Includes all high school-level coursework through 9th grade

  2. Standardized Test Scores (Optional): PSAT or SAT, ideally in the 90th percentile or higher

  3. Student Portrait Sheet (SPS): Short-answer questions focused on interests, character, and motivations

  4. Personal Essay: Log-answer question focused on personal fit with TJ

  5. Teacher Recommendations (3): Typically from current math and science teachers


Preparation Tips

  • Strengthen Your Academic Profile: Take honors or advanced-level math and science classes to demonstrate readiness for TJHSST’s curriculum.

  • Engage in STEM Activities: Participate in clubs, competitions, or independent projects to show initiative and sustained interest in STEM.

  • Practice Writing: Prepare for the SPS with reflective and structured responses. Clarity, focus, and personal insight matter.

  • Build Strong Teacher Relationships: Choose recommenders who can provide detailed, thoughtful insight into your abilities and work ethic.

FAQ

Can homeschool or private school students apply?

Yes, as long as they live in one of the eligible jurisdictions and meet all other application criteria.

Are standardized test scores required?

No. However, strong scores can supplement your application positively.

Can students reapply if they weren’t admitted in 8th grade?

Yes. Applicants not offered admission during the freshman cycle may reapply as sophomores, provided they meet eligibility.
