What Should You Study for the TJHSST Problem-Solving Essay?

FCPS does not publish a current PSE topic list. It says the essay uses math and/or science content, includes multiple variables or steps, and requires a solution plus an explanation of the process. The safest preparation is therefore broader than memorizing formulas and narrower than trying to relearn every middle-school course: build the reasoning skills that let a student organize and explain unfamiliar problems.

What a Skills-First Plan Means

A skills-first plan strengthens the foundations needed to understand and explain unfamiliar problems. It does not attempt to reverse-engineer a secret syllabus from a handful of old tasks.

Students should be comfortable reading quantitative and scientific information, choosing an appropriate representation, developing a defensible solution, and communicating why it makes sense. TJTestPrep uses those demands to select practice that matches each student's current needs.

Math Foundations Worth Strengthening

Because FCPS identifies math as possible content but gives no topic list, the following should be treated as a general middle-school problem-solving foundation, not a prediction:

  • Ratios, rates, proportions, and percent: Understand how quantities change together and keep units meaningful.
  • Algebraic representation: Define variables, translate relationships, solve equations, and interpret what a solution means.
  • Geometry and measurement: Use diagrams, spatial relationships, scale, perimeter, area, volume, and basic coordinate reasoning when relevant.

Science and Data Reasoning Worth Strengthening

Math may appear inside a science context, and science reasoning may require very little calculation. Useful foundations include:

  • Identify independent, dependent, and controlled variables when an experimental design calls for them.
  • Read graphs and tables carefully, including axes, units, trends, exceptions, and limits.
  • Distinguish an observation from an explanation and a correlation from a supported causal claim.
  • Use provided evidence rather than importing outside facts that the task does not require.
  • Propose a fair comparison or improvement and explain what problem it addresses.
  • Recognize uncertainty, measurement limits, or alternative explanations when relevant.

Again, this is a coaching foundation, not a list of promised PSE topics. The transferable skill is making a claim that the available evidence can support.

What Historical Prompt Evidence Can Tell You

TJTestPrep’s archive includes reconstructed or reported tasks from earlier cycles. Those posts can expose students to varied quantitative, scientific, and data-rich situations. They can also help families see why formula memorization alone is insufficient.

They cannot establish that a prior topic will repeat, that a prior format remains current, or that a topic appeared with a particular official frequency. FCPS does not publish a current distribution. Treat each historical task as one data point and label it with its year.

Better question: “Which skill did this old problem require?” is more useful than “Will this exact topic come back?”
