You opened the portal. You saw "Wait Pool." And now you're probably feeling... a lot of things at once. Relief that it wasn't a flat-out rejection. Anxiety about what happens next. Maybe even frustration that you're stuck in limbo.
I get it. Waiting is genuinely hard—especially when you've worked this hard and care this much. But I want you to understand something important: being waitlisted is not a consolation prize. It's a real shot. And the numbers have changed in ways that might surprise you.
Let me walk you through exactly what this means, what your real odds are, and what you should (and shouldn't) do while you wait.
Being Waitlisted Is Still a Strong Accomplishment
Let's put this into perspective: thousands of incredibly talented students apply to TJHSST each year. Being waitlisted means the admissions team saw real potential in you.
Your application was reviewed favorably. Your essays connected. Your academics were competitive. You just missed the cutoff — and now you're on a shortlist that could shift in your favor at any moment.
Your Odds Are Much Better Than You Might Think
In the past, the TJ waitlist was over 1,000 students long. That's no longer the case.
Last year, only about 200 students were placed on the waitlist. That's an enormous change — and it means your odds of receiving an offer have significantly improved.
While TJ doesn't share exact numbers, historically, a substantial portion of waitlisted students eventually receive an offer over the summer, especially by mid-to-late August.
When Will You Find Out?
Here's the tricky part: you won't get regular updates. TJHSST does not release your position on the waitlist, and they don't offer a public "ranking."
Most students find out if they're accepted off the waitlist in July or August, often with very little notice. That's why it's important to plan for both scenarios — getting in and not.
Should You Write a Letter of Continued Interest (LOCI)?
Important: As of May 2025, TJHSST has explicitly stated that additional emails or updates from waitlisted students will not be reviewed or forwarded to the admissions committee. They have indicated that the evaluation process is complete and that sending a Letter of Continued Interest (LOCI) will not influence the outcome.
In past years, some students did see movement off the waitlist after sending a brief, respectful LOCI — and we cannot rule out isolated cases where it may have helped. However, we now recommend against sending any updates unless new guidance is issued by TJHSST.
This is a shift from prior years, and we are adjusting our recommendations accordingly.
If you still choose to send a LOCI, you do so at your own discretion. Be brief, polite, and do not include new achievements or re-argue your case. But again — TJ has made clear that this information will not be used.
A Letter of Continued Interest (LOCI) is a short, focused letter you send to express your ongoing enthusiasm for TJ. It can also highlight new accomplishments or growth since your original application.
While TJHSST hasn't officially endorsed or encouraged LOCIs, some waitlisted students have found success submitting one. It's a chance to stand out — just don't overdo it.
Tips for a great LOCI:
- Keep it to one page
- Express specific enthusiasm for TJ's programs (labs, clubs, culture)
- Reaffirm your commitment to enroll if admitted
Keep Your Momentum Going
Even though your application process is paused, your progress shouldn't be. Here's how to stay sharp and maximize your time:
- Engage in STEM Projects: Independent research, coding, robotics, engineering builds — whatever inspires you.
- Take on Summer Enrichment: Consider STEM camps, virtual internships, or advanced coursework.
- Polish Study Skills: TJ's academics are intense. Prepping now will smooth your transition if you're accepted.
The more you grow now, the stronger you'll be — no matter where you end up next year.
Prepare Like You'll Be Accepted
This is critical. Many waitlisted students get a call in late July or even mid-August — sometimes just days before the school year starts.
That means you need to:
- Think about which courses you'll take if accepted
- Plan for summer PE to open up your schedule
- Start exploring TJ electives and research labs
- Prepare mentally for a quick transition
Yes, celebrate your accomplishments — but also be ready.
We're Here to Help You Plan
As part of our CollegePrep support, we work with waitlisted students to plan both paths: their base high school journey and a potential late TJ transition.
We'll help you:
- Create a STEM enrichment plan
- Draft a LOCI (if you choose)
- Choose coursework that aligns with TJ's tracks
- Develop confidence no matter the outcome
Waiting is hard. But it's easier with support.
FAQs: Waitlisted at TJHSST
How many students are typically on the TJHSST waitlist?
Recently, the number has dropped to around 200, which is a dramatic reduction compared to years when it exceeded 1,000.
What are my chances of getting off the waitlist?
While TJ doesn't publish exact data, a smaller waitlist means a higher likelihood. Many students receive offers between June and August.
Does TJ rank the waitlist? Can I find out my number?
No — the school does not disclose your rank or offer status updates. Decisions are made as space becomes available.
Should I send additional recommendation letters or updates?
TJ typically does not accept additional materials after the deadline.
When should I start preparing in case I'm accepted late?
Start now. Look into TJ's curriculum, summer options, and possible research tracks. The more prepared you are, the easier the transition.
What if I don't get off the waitlist — should I reapply next year?
TJ does have a sophomore admissions cycle. If that's your plan, the SAT is critical — most accepted sophomores score 1500+. We support re-applicants with plans.
You're Still in the Running
Look—I know this isn't the outcome you wanted. Nobody dreams of the waitlist. But you're not out. You're right there, on the edge, and the door hasn't closed.
Use this time wisely. Stay sharp. Keep growing. And whatever happens, remember: you're the same talented, capable person you were before you saw that decision. TJ doesn't define your future. You do.
I'm genuinely rooting for you. And if you need help navigating what comes next—whether it's a late acceptance or planning a killer freshman year somewhere else—we're here.
