Overview of TJHSST Sophomore Admissions
Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST) accepts a small number of rising sophomores each year through a highly selective admissions process. This opportunity is ideal for current 9th-grade students with a strong academic foundation and a demonstrated passion for STEM. Typically, 10 to 20 students are admitted based on space availability and application strength.
Eligibility Requirements
Residency:
Applicants must live with a parent or legal guardian in one of the following Virginia jurisdictions:
- Fairfax County (including Fairfax City)
- Arlington County
- Loudoun County
- Prince William County
- Falls Church City
Coursework (by end of 9th grade):
Students must be on track to complete the following high school-level credits:
- English (1.0 credit)
- Algebra I (1.0 credit)
- Geometry (1.0 credit)
- Biology (1.0 credit)
- World Language (1.0 credit)
- Health/PE (1.0 credit)
- Elective (1.0 credit)
Academic Performance:
A minimum GPA is not officially required, but successful applicants typically maintain a GPA of 3.5 or higher.
Standardized Testing (Optional, but highly recommended):
Students are encouraged to submit PSAT or SAT scores, preferably in the 90th percentile or above. While not mandatory, strong scores can strengthen the application.

- April 1–April 23, 2025 (by 4:00 PM): Submit 9th-grade transcript and any optional standardized test scores to tjadmissions@fcps.edu
- May 2025: Notification of eligibility to continue the application
- May 16, 2025 (by 4:00 PM): Deadline to submit the full application
- June 2025: Admission decisions released
