Overview of TJHSST Sophomore Admissions

Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST) accepts a small number of rising sophomores each year through a highly selective admissions process. This opportunity is ideal for current 9th-grade students with a strong academic foundation and a demonstrated passion for STEM. Typically, 10 to 20 students are admitted based on space availability and application strength.

Eligibility Requirements

Residency:

Applicants must live with a parent or legal guardian in one of the following Virginia jurisdictions:

• Fairfax County (including Fairfax City)
• Arlington County
• Loudoun County
• Prince William County
• Falls Church City

Coursework (by end of 9th grade):

Students must be on track to complete the following high school-level credits:

• English (1.0 credit)
• Algebra I (1.0 credit)
• Geometry (1.0 credit)
• Biology (1.0 credit)
• World Language (1.0 credit)
• Health/PE (1.0 credit)
• Elective (1.0 credit)

Academic Performance:

A minimum GPA is not officially required, but successful applicants typically maintain a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

Standardized Testing (Optional, but highly recommended):

Students are encouraged to submit PSAT or SAT scores, preferably in the 90th percentile or above. While not mandatory, strong scores can strengthen the application.
