TJHSST Sophomore Admissions: The 2026-27 Guide

TJHSST does admit rising sophomores, but through a separate process with far fewer seats than the freshman cycle. FCPS says the recent number has been about 15 to 20 students, and the final count depends on attrition. A student who was not offered freshman admission may be eligible to apply again.

The 2026-27 sophomore cycle is for the Class of 2030. It begins with a transcript review in April 2027. Only applicants whose coursework and optional test materials pass that first review move into the full application.

Who Can Apply and What Courses Are Required?

The FCPS page is written for current ninth-grade students seeking entry for tenth grade. Applicants outside Fairfax County should contact the TJHSST Admissions Office before starting, because FCPS directs them to confirm that their school division participates in the sophomore process.

By the end of the 2026-27 school year, the applicant must have earned or be on track to earn one credit in each of these areas:

• English 1
• Algebra 1
• Biology 1
• Geometry 1
• Health and Physical Education 1
• World Language 1
• Elective 1

Biology and Geometry must appear on the ninth-grade transcript as completed or currently enrolled courses. Families should compare the student's actual transcript with the official page before assuming that an alternate course title will qualify.

The Application Has Two Stages

Stage 1: transcript and optional scores

The student first creates the applicant account and submits a ninth-grade transcript. PSAT or SAT scores are optional. FCPS recommends a score at or above the 90th percentile, but it does not present that recommendation as a guarantee or a substitute for the rest of the application. The page says ACT and ACT Aspire scores cannot be used in place of PSAT or SAT scores.

Stage 2: the full application

After FCPS approves the transcript review, a parent or guardian creates the parent account and the applicant completes the rest of the file. The published components include:

• Applicant and parent demographic information
• Teacher information for three recommendations
• A Student Portrait Sheet with questions and short-answer responses
• A personal essay
• Required signatures and final submission

The recommendations and writing serve different purposes. Recommendations let teachers describe the student's classroom readiness and habits. The SPS and essay let the student communicate directly. A strong response is specific, grounded in the student's own experience, and clear enough that a reader does not have to infer the point.

What FCPS Says It Evaluates

The official page describes a review of the student's aptitude, prior academic excellence and coursework, strong test scores when submitted, interest and motivation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, and readiness for research and independent study.

The evidence available to reviewers is limited to the materials FCPS requests: the Part II responses, three recommendations, optional scores, and transcripts. FCPS says it does not accept other supporting materials. Families should therefore resist the urge to build a shadow application full of certificates or attachments that the process does not request.

No public formula tells a family exactly how much each component is worth. A 90th-percentile test score, a particular course label, or one impressive activity cannot be converted into reliable admission odds.

How to Prepare Without Chasing a Formula

1. Audit the transcript first. Confirm the seven required credits and the Biology and Geometry entries before spending time on essays.
2. Build a factual activity record. List the projects, classes, questions, and experiences that genuinely shaped the student's interest and readiness.
3. Practice reflective writing. Work on concrete examples, explanation, structure, and revision. Do not manufacture a persona or copy a model answer.
4. Plan recommendation logistics early. Enter the requested teacher information by the FCPS deadline and give teachers the time the process allows.
5. Treat optional testing as optional. Submit a score because it is useful evidence, not because a rumor says it unlocks admission.
