TJHSST Sophomore Admissions: The 2026-27 Guide

TJHSST does admit rising sophomores, but through a separate process with far fewer seats than the freshman cycle. FCPS says the recent number has been about 15 to 20 students, and the final count depends on attrition. A student who was not offered freshman admission may be eligible to apply again.

The 2026-27 sophomore cycle is for the Class of 2030. It begins with a transcript review in April 2027. Only applicants whose coursework and optional test materials pass that first review move into the full application.

Who Can Apply and What Courses Are Required?

The FCPS page is written for current ninth-grade students seeking entry for tenth grade. Students must live full time with a parent or legal guardian in a participating division at application and maintain continuous residency through admissions and attendance. The participating divisions are Arlington, Fairfax County (including the City of Fairfax), Falls Church City, Loudoun, and Prince William. Applicants outside Fairfax County must contact the TJHSST Admissions Office before applying to confirm that applications will be allowed from their division. Provide the requested proof of residency.

By the end of the 2026-27 school year, the applicant must have completed one credit in each of these areas:

• English 1
• Algebra 1
• Biology 1
• Geometry 1
• Health and Physical Education 1
• World Language 1
• Elective 1

The transcript must include at least ninth-grade first-semester marks for all high school courses taken or being taken, plus courses taken before ninth grade for high school credit. Biology is required and Geometry is the minimum math requirement at application. If the school does not offer the exact required courses, submit detailed curriculum or syllabus documentation with the application. FCPS allows students who have taken Algebra 2 without Trigonometry to apply and addresses math placement if they are admitted.

The Application Has Two Stages

Stage 1: transcript and optional scores

The student first creates the applicant account and emails the high school transcript and any optional official PSAT or SAT score reports as attachments to tjadmissions@fcps.edu between April 1 and April 21, 2027, by 4 p.m. on April 21. Do not submit before April 1. Score reports must clearly show the student's name. FCPS says SAT registration score sends addressed to TJHSST do not reach the Admissions Office. ACT, ASPIRE, and other standardized tests are not substitutes.

PSAT and SAT scores are optional but recommended. FCPS targets the 90th percentile or above, but its overview says scores "should" meet that level while its coursework section says submitted scores "must." The page does not identify which percentile field to use. Confirm with Admissions before relying on a lower score or an uncertain percentile. No score guarantees admission.

A missed fall PSAT does not itself make a student ineligible. FCPS accepts official PSAT or SAT scores already received and does not identify a preferred PSAT version. PSAT registration is arranged through a school or district; confirm directly if a host school accepts outside students. A later SAT or school-based PSAT can work only if the official score report arrives before April 21. College Board currently lists the March 6, 2027 SAT, with a February 19 regular registration deadline and a March 19 scheduled score release. The May 1 and June 5 SAT dates are too late. For spring school testing, student scores for tests submitted by March 26 are scheduled for April 15; tests submitted by April 9 are scheduled for April 29, after the FCPS deadline. Confirm the school's reporting schedule.

Stage 2: the full application

After FCPS approves the transcript review, a parent or guardian creates the parent account and the applicant completes the rest of the file. The published components include:

• Applicant and parent demographic information
• Teacher information for three recommendations
• A Student Portrait Sheet with questions and short-answer responses
• A personal essay
• Electronic signatures from both applicant and parent, final submission, and the confirmation email

May 5 is the applicant's deadline to enter teacher recommendation information. FCPS's public sophomore calendar does not list a separate deadline for teachers to submit the recommendations. Follow the current portal and teacher instructions. FCPS also does not publish a fixed 2027 SPS prompt count or word limits on its process page; use the application instructions after approval.

The recommendations and writing serve different purposes. Recommendations let teachers describe the student's classroom readiness and habits. The SPS and essay let the student communicate directly. A strong response is specific, grounded in the student's own experience, and clear enough that a reader does not have to infer the point.

What FCPS Says It Evaluates

The official page describes a review of the student's aptitude, prior academic excellence and coursework, strong test scores when submitted, interest and motivation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, and readiness for research and independent study.

The evidence available to reviewers is limited to the materials FCPS requests: the Part II responses, three recommendations, optional scores, and transcripts. FCPS says it does not accept other supporting materials. Families should therefore resist the urge to build a shadow application full of certificates or attachments that the process does not request.

No public formula tells a family exactly how much each component is worth. A 90th-percentile test score, a particular course label, or one impressive activity cannot be converted into reliable admission odds.

How to Prepare Without Chasing a Formula

1. Audit the transcript first. Confirm the seven required credits and the Biology and Geometry entries before spending time on essays.
2. Build a factual activity record. List the projects, classes, questions, and experiences that genuinely shaped the student's interest and readiness.
3. Practice reflective writing. Work on concrete examples, explanation, structure, and revision. Do not manufacture a persona or copy a model answer.
4. Plan recommendation logistics early. Enter the requested teacher information by the FCPS deadline and give teachers the time the process allows.
5. Treat optional testing as optional. Submit a score because it is useful evidence, not because a rumor says it unlocks admission.
